That’s awesome. I’m stealing your “crank” term. In so many modern works I read, that’s all I see anymore. Crankery. Assumptions, presumptions, biases, and speculations all passed off as fact without a stich of evidence. And you can’t argue with any of them. They refuse to listen to facts or logic.

There are two peer-reviewed academic studies now answering your question:

Richard Carrier, On the Historicity of Jesus: Why We Might Have Reason for Doubt (Sheffield-Phoenix, 2014)

Raphael Lataster, Questioning the Historicity of Jesus: Why a Philosophical Analysis Elucidates the Discourse (Brill, 2019)

These can be acquired through your local public library.

For a colloquial, pop-market summary, see:

Richard Carrier, Jesus from Outer Space: What the Earliest Christians Really Believed about Christ (Pitchstone, 2020), which is eminently affordable in print or kindle.

If the scientists doesnt agree or believe that christ ever existed, but the other side does, we come at an impasse. Shall we agree that so many God’s exist?

Yes, the D. in D.M. stood for Dorothy. See Wikipedia.

Murdock / Acharya S? This is the first time I’ve seen Dorothy used.

When I first encountered mythicism her writings were prominent in my studies, but I’ve long since graduated to more logical arguments.

Thanks for your scholarship! As a non-scholar myself, I’ve been hoping to find something that addressed some of the early mythicist arguments I read from her and others, and this was very helpful.

As someone who likes history and cares about sociology, when I started hearing these astrotheological arguments, I started thinking, “Okay, so that does sound interesting. What proof is there that broad ideological traditions are all astrotheological? Does the pattern that may hold in one context hold elsewhere? Were the Jews in particular astrotheological at the time?” No answers are forthcoming on any of that. I didn’t need to go check because the people making the case had so badly flubbed even making it pass initial muster. I may have an unusually high benchmark compared to the average member of the public for questioning master theories that reduce huge swaths of human relations to one variable.

It just sucks that the bad astrotheological arguments poison the well for anyone arguing to the same kinds of conclusions from valid methodologies.
